Description
2011 Event date will be announced by December 1, 2010
The specific date and time for online registration for the 2011 event will also be announced on December 1, 2010.
Azalea Triathlon to move to two days in 2010:
The Azalea Triathlon will be held on two consective days in 2010. The event dates will be as follows:
Azalea Triathlon (Sat) - March 13th
Azalea Triathlon (Sun) - March 14th
We're doing this as a way of being able to increase the number of people who can participate in the Azalea Triathlon, last year this event sold out in 3 hours after opening registration, so by expanding to two days we can enable more people to race.
There will be no differences in the races. When one race fills up on any particular day, people will have the option of registering for the other day. For example, if the Azalea Triathlon (Sat) fills up people will be able to register for the Azalea Triathlon (Sun). Awards will be given out for both event. All the race categories available in Inside-Out Sports North Carolina Triathlon Series events will be offered for both events. For instance, if you are a novice, you can register for either of the two event dates. Same applies to all the other race categories.
The exception to this rule will be relay teams. Relay teams will only be allowed to race on the March 14th event date. There will be no relay team competition on the March 13th date.
Inside-Out Sports North Carolina Triathlon Series Ranking Points:
Inside-Out Sports North Carolina Triathlon Series points will be given out for both events. There will be no difference between the event dates. As far as Inside-Out Sports North Carolina Triathlon Series ranking points are concerned, we are simply now offering one additional race in which a person can obtain points. The point value for the Azalea Triathlon (Sat) on March 13th will be same as the points value for the Azalea Triathlon (Sun) on March 14th.
Course Descriptions:
(for course maps - click on "Course Maps" button above)
Swim:
The swim is a 300 yard pool swim in the UNCW natatorium. Participants start at one side of the pool and snake their way up and down each lane as they work towards the other side of the pool. Being a pool swim race, participants must submit an estimated 100 yard swim time when registering. These times are used for seeding purposes. It is in your best interest to submit a time as accurate as possible. Submitting a time that is too fast for you puts you up with swimmers who will be passing you during the swim - not good for you or them. Putting a time that is too slow places you with slower swimmers and forces you to have to pass everyone. The ideal scenario for all participants is to have people submit accurate times - the whole swim flows better.
The swim start process involves all the Open & Masters Open participants going off first, followed by all the Age Groupers, Clydesdales, Masters Clydesdales, Athenas, and Relay Teams, followed by all the Novices and Masters Novices.
Bike:
The bike course is one 10 mile loop. The course is flat and takes place on the UNCW campus and also on the neighborhood roads that surround the UNCW campus. The roads are open to traffic - but traffic is usually fairly light.
Run:
The 5K run course is an out & back affair - totally on the UNCW campus sidewalk system. The course is totally flat and moderately shaded.
