Description
NOTE: On-line registration will close at 8AM on Thursday May 6, 2010. After this time we WILL BE taking registrations during posted packet pick up hours on Saturday and Sunday.
The Lake Murray Triathlon has become a favorite chance for all South Carolina Triathletes to showcase their talents against the best in the state. Nestled in the center of South Carolina athletes from the Upstate, Midlands and Coastal regions converge into Columbia each year for this sprint distance event.
The swim is one counter-clockwise 750 meter loop. Wetsuits are normally legal but the water temperature borders the legal limit each year. Depending on the wind swimmers may encounter light to moderate chop with a small current.
The bike course is long for a sprint distance event - one 16 mile loop. Road surfaces are good with a few rough areas scattered through the course. This is to be expected as the course winds along completely rural roads. Only 5 turns on this course and they are marked with pavement arrows and directional signs. Police and volunteers man the proper intersections.
The 5k run course is very unique in that runners get several opportunities to see where they in in relation to the competition. A one loop course with several out and back spurs gives athletes a chance to see where they are on the course. Relatively flat and shaded, this run course can be very fast.
Affiliated Charities
This event benefits Team Type 1 and The SCOA Cares Foundation.
This year we are focusing on Skin Cancer Prevention, as a service to our community of athletes. In addition, we are adopting a new charity which we hope our athletes will help us
support. The SCOA Cares Foundiation, focuses in helping uninsured and under-insured patients receive cancer treatments, medications, and transportation. Costs to cover these expenses are usually very high, so every dollar counts in our effort to help. We believe that with a small $2 donation from each of our participants, plus proceeds from our event; we can make a small difference in somebody's life next month. Every dollar donated to this chairty goes directly to treat cancer patients.
All 2010 SCTS events will benefit Team Type 1
The main objectives of Team Type 1 are as follows:
- Strive for 6.5 program - The outreach program where athletes visit hospitals, families and caregivers to educate them on living with and overcoming Diabetes.
- Helping fund and resource the 70,000 people living without the insulin they need. The Team will be going to Rwanda, South Africa to pass out supplies and teach the people how to use the insulin and technology to live healthier.
- "Cure Death from Diabetes" a program to eliminate death from the complications of Diabetes in the next 5 years. This will involve more educational cirriculum, pushing for approval of new technology and having the athletes test new medical equipment to expidite the arrival of the "synthetic pancreas" and closed loop insulin delivery system.
