The Inaugural J Cecil Jarvis Memorial Triathlon, presented by United Hospital Center, took place at Maple Lake, near Bridgeport, West Virginia, in July 2008. Inspired by the memory of J. Cecil Jarvis, the event received incredible sponsorship, community, and volunteer support. The event drew 165 registered participants from six different states and Washington, DC, and over 100 volunteers and additional spectators, making the J Cecil Jarvis Memorial Triathlon already the largest sprint triathlon with an open water swim in West Virginia. The “big race” experience that the event delivered along with its difficult yet achievable challenge was enjoyed by experienced triathletes and newcomers alike. As a result of the tremendous sponsor and participant support, the Inaugural event was able to donate over $9,000 to the J. Cecil Jarvis Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Swim:
The swim course is a rectangle-shaped 600 yard clockwise swim with different start and exit points at the Maple Lake clubhouse. The water temperature is expected to be around 78 degrees, making the use of wetsuits optional; however, only a few participants wore wetsuits last year, and it will definitely not be necessary to invest in a wetsuit for this event. After a stair step swim exit from the lake, participants will run only about 50 yards to transition.
Bike:
The bike course is an out-and-back 12 mile very challenging and somewhat technical ride that contains some moderately difficult rolling hills as well as a difficult very small gear climb on Smith Road in each direction. The pavement is good and the downhill portions of the course are not treacherous. In addition to the turnaround, there are four turns in each direction on the bike course. The bike entry and exit will be from the north end of the transition area and utilize the north side of the lake road.
Run:
The 5K run is an out-and-back, two loop course from the south end of the transition area around the southern half of the lake on a paved road. Outside of where the road dips down behind the dam, the run course is very flat. Aide stations will be positioned at both turn around points on the run course.
