Description

The Hickory Knob Triathlon takes place in the Hickory Knob State Resort Park, perhaps the most beautiful of all South Carolina Parks. Athletes have the ability to stay in the park lodge rooms just feet from the transition area and finish line.

The swim is a clockwise triangular course with wetsuits always being allowed. Water temperatures normally range between 70 and 73 degrees for this in water start. Depending on the wind there may be a light to moderate chop with little to no current. A very steep climb out of the lake greets athletes after the swim.

The bike is long and tough, as the event returns to the original 28 mile, one loop course. With the steepest grades being found in the first 3 miles the course flattens out to rolling hills throughout the rest of the bike. A water bottle handoff can be found at mile 16. Turns are marked with pavement arrows and directional signs. Police and volunteers man all intersections.

The run is an out and back 10k course. Perhaps the toughest run in the GTS SCTS, the Hickory Knob course winds past the golf course and up and down a series of very steep grades before leveling out near the campground. Then it is around the turn around point to finish with a gradual ascent to the finish line.

A SPRINT DISTANCE triathlon is also offered at this event.

Team Type 1 LogoAll 2010 SCTS events will benefit Team Type 1

The main objectives of Team Type 1 are as follows:

  1. Strive for 6.5 program - The outreach program where athletes visit hospitals, families and caregivers to educate them on living with and overcoming Diabetes.
  2. Helping fund and resource the 70,000 people living without the insulin they need. The Team will be going to Rwanda, South Africa to pass out supplies and teach the people how to use the insulin and technology to live healthier.
  3. "Cure Death from Diabetes" a program to eliminate death from the complications of Diabetes in the next 5 years. This will involve more educational cirriculum, pushing for approval of new technology and having the athletes test new medical equipment to expidite the arrival of the "synthetic pancreas" and closed loop insulin delivery system.
