Description
This year marks the 6th Annual Lake Lure Triathlon, which is the anchor event in a weekend of festivities and athletic competition dubbed the Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad. It is without a doubt the most scenic triathlon in the TrySports Series. Home to beautiful Lake Lure, Chimney Rock State Park and the historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa, there is no lack of beauty to amaze the senses. The triathlon is hosted by Rumbling Bald Resort which is nestled at the base of the majestic 2,800-foot Rumbling Bald Mountain on the north end of Lake Lure.
The Lake Lure Triathlon is also 1/3 of the 3 RACES IN 3 DAYS CHALLENGE. The Challenge begins with a Friday night run, the Lake Lure 10K Dam Run. The Lake Lure Triathlon is part two of the challenge and is on Saturday morning. Sunday morning presents the Race to the Rock. Athletes choose between the 5K Run or 7K Bike up Chimney Rock Mountain in the beautiful Chimney Rock State Park.
LAKE LURE TRIATHLON DESCRIPTION
Swim
The 500m lake swim commences on a sandy beach, curves around a buoy and finishes right at the transition area, which is within 50 feet of the lake. The clear mountain water is smooth as glass and should be close to 80 degrees in August. Scenes from the movie "Dirty Dancing" were filmed on this lake! Please note that wet suits will not be allowed for this race.
Bike
The 25k bike course is challenging, but you will be rewarded with breathtaking views as it rolls through the countryside at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You will finish back at the same transition area.
Run
The 5k run is a steady but reasonable uphill that winds up a beautiful valley paralleling Bald Mountain Golf Course and then a gentle downhill to a beach finish beside Lake Lure.
Age and gender groups are assigned in age increments with the top three in each category receiving gold, silver and bronze medals.
This charity event is unique because it is family friendly with a full weekend of activities and sport competitions beginning with a golf tournament on Thursday, a challenging five mile run, ski show, dance, and fireworks on Friday, triathlon sprint, tennis and volleyball tournaments plus kids' games and Dragon Boat races on Saturday and a bike/run to Chimney Rock on Sunday.
For a full listing of activities check out the Olympiad website at www.hickorynutolympiad.com.
Affiliated Charities
This event benefits Lake Lure Classical Academy.
The Olympiad Board of Governors has selected the Lake Lure Classical Academy as the primary beneficiary for the year 2010. Profits from the four day sports event will be used to purchase playground and athletic equipment for the new charter school. One of the missions of the Olympiad is "to promote the health and wellness in children and adults"; therefore, purchasing equipment to help keep children active is a perfect fit.
Others receiving funds from the 2010 Olympiad will be the Lake Lure Lions Club, area volunteer fire departments and the Hickory Nut Gorge EMS.
