Description
The Lake Logan Episcopal Center is proud to host the 2010 Lake Logan Aquathlon as part of the Lake Logan Multi-Sport Festival coordinated by Glory Hound Events. The Lake Logan International Triathlon will be held on Saturday, August 7 and the second Lake Logan Sprint Triathlon will be held on Sunday, August 8. Lake Logan was the site of the 2009 USAT Aquathlon National Championships and we want to encourage the growth of this sport by continuing the race in 2010.
The Lake Logan Episcopal Center is one of the most beautiful settings for a multi-sport event you will find in the country. While most in the Southeast are racing in hot, oppressive conditions in early August, Lake Logan offers a welcome break from the heat and humidity. The cool morning air high in the Appalachian Mountains makes for a comfortable race day with highs last year topping out near 80 degrees.
Traditionally, aquathlons are run-swim-run events but because the swim will be wetsuit legal, we are refining the event to swim-run.
The 1,500 meter swim course is a clockwise rectangle with an in water start. Water temperature is expected to be near 70 degrees and wetsuits will be allowed. Athletes will exit the water after swimming beneath the highway bridge and into the creek mouth. From here it is a short run along a grass field into Transition.
The 5 km run is an out and back course with the first half gradually climbing up towards the Blue Ridge parkway, winding alongside the cool mountain streams. The ascent toward the turn around is so gradual runners don't realize they have been going up until they have hit the turn around marker and started the final 2.5K toward the finish line. Aid stations will be positioned every mile on this lightly traveled road.
