News

September 18, 2017 : We have had a lot of questions regarding Fat Bikes so here are some answers. Please use the contact us link above to send us any specific questions.

  • We do not provide Fat Bikes for rent, however Shawn at Bike Cycles does have Fat Bikes for Sale and a number of Fat Bike he rents. If you do not have a Fat Bike you may want to check with your local bike shop(s) to see if they have any Fat Bikes for rent or demo.
  • We will not allow any tire size below 4.0 onto the course due to the heavy sand in some parts of the course. This is for the safety of all riders.
  • One suggestion if you do not have a Fat Bike, but want to still do the event. Find a friend who has one. They may want to do the mixed team relay with you.

I hope everyone is getting excited about this brand new style of multisport. I get a lot of comments about how unique and safe the event is and that they would like to do it and I always tell them the same thing. Fat is the New Thin.

August 21, 2017 : We are proud to welcome Waterman's Brewing as the presenting sponsor for the Fat Cross Beach Bash. Waterman's is generously providing all the awards, as well as providing the pre and post race party, including awards in their 'Ohana room. What's more rewarding than to drink a beer with your fellow athletes ? Their amazing brew's by their talented Brew Master Zac Brown, will be on offer to sample. If you cant wait to sample their beer and food selection, check them out on Facebook and their website, www.watermansbrewing.com and make a point to visit. The brewery is conveniently located just off Wrightsville Beach at 1610 Pavilion Place.

Make sure you register today and make Watermans Brewery one of your stops when you come to the beach.

May 1st, 2017 : Online Registration is now open.

Description

In the first event of its kind, the Fat Bike Beach Bash will have 2 formats to choose from

  • Fat Bike Beach Triathlon - 500 meter swim, 9 Mile Fat Cross Bike, 2 mile run.
  • Fat Bike Beach Duathlon - 2 mile run, 9 Mile Fat Cross Bike, 2 mile run.

Starting at Ocenanic Pier on Wrightsville Beach, the event will start on low tide to make the best use of the hard pack exposed by the receding tide.

This event will be the most fun you have ever had in a triathlon, guaranteeing you to have the biggest grin from ear to ear to the finish. The course is completely void from any motorized vehicles and if you have any over corrections, the sand makes for a soft landing. Adding our unique beach furniture and a few challenges to mix it up in front of your family and friends, will make the fun meter go into overdrive when you pass them every 5-8 minutes on the 1 mile bike loop.

All of these reasons will probably make it the safest, most spectator friendly triathlon or duathlon you will ever race in.

Event Site Rules

While we expect this to be a fun filled event there will be a couple of rules we have to make sure you dont miss

  1. Drafting. Please draft a lot and draft often.
  2. Overtaken. Thats an invitation to go faster.
  3. Blocking. We have no defined lanes. Find a safe way to go around
  4. Dismounting and running through obstacles is allowed, sometimes its is the only way.

On a serious levels

  1. Only tires over 4 inches are allowed. If you have a mountain bike and it has 4 inch tires, great, but anything under 4 inches will make it dangerous for others in the soft sand.
  2. Respect your fellow competitor. No pushing or shoving in tight sections.
  3. No riding in the sand dunes.
  4. If there are marked turtle nests DO NOT ENTER the marked boundaries.

Packet Pickup

We will get you your race packets the day before and the morning off the event, but we are still getting the sand out of our flip flops. We will publish those details in the coming weeks.
