Racin' the Basin 3 Mi.

New race date due to cancellation of the event on April 7th.

Racin' the Basin is now part of the Carolina Swim Series

The Carolina Swim Series consists of five open water swims in the greater Wilmington area.
There are two swims in the spring, one in the middle of summer, and then two more in the fall.

1) Stoked to Go Out - Saturday, May 19th @ Wrightsville Beach
2) Swim CB - Sunday, June 24th @ Carolina Beach
3) Racin' the Basin - Saturday, July 28th @ Ft. Fisher
4) Pier-to-Pier - Saturday, September 15th @ Wrightsville Beach
5) Swim the Loop - Sunday, September 23rd @ Wrightsville Beach

The Carolina Swim Series will culminate with a year-end awards party on a yet to be named date.

The new Racin' the Basin swim offers swimmers a choice of two distances; in addition to the 3 mile race, there is also a 1.5 mile race option.

The race takes place in the Basin - a semi-protected body of brackish water that is situated just north of Bald Head Island - where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

The Basin is separated on the east side from the ocean by massive sand dunes and the beach - there is no water access into the Basin directly from the ocean.
The Basin is separated on the west side from the Cape Fear River by a manmade rock wall. This rock wall connects the southern tip of Pleasure Island (Carolina Beach & Kure Beach) and Zeke's Island - a small island connected to Bald Head Island.

At low tide, people can walk along the rock wall all the way to Zeke's Island.
At high tide, much of the wall is submerged allowing water access to the Basin from the river.
But it's this rock wall that prevents the Basin from having any currents. It also prevents any type of "questionable" ocean wildlife from inhabiting this area.

Racin' the Basin will take place at the unusual start time of 3:00pm.
This early afternoon start time not only allows participants to enjoy the warmest part of an early April day, but also is when high tide occurs at the Basin.
High tide at the Basin allows for average depths of 4-6 feet where swimmers will be swimming.
This will be a calm and fast open water swim.

In the above Google Earth image, the start finish location is indicated by the "421" (Hwy 421).
The Atlantic Ocean is on the right side of this image and the Cape Fear River is on the left.
You can see the rock wall that separates the river from the Basin.

Ample parking will be available at the race site.

Participants will park in the area shown on the image below in red - both sides of Hwy 421 before the paved parking spaces begin at the boat ramp area.

Follow the directions of the volunteers on race day.

This is a pretty simple place to find. Follow Hwy 421 until you have to drive into the water.

The Basin is located where Hwy 421 ends - just south of the ferry entrance road for the Ft. Fisher-to-Southport ferry.

If you're not from the Wilmington area - I-40 becomes College Rd. as you get to Wilmington. College Rd. then turns into Carolina Beach Rd. as you head south towards Carolina Beach & Kure Beach (this is Hwy 421). Just stay on the main road through "downtown Carolina Beach" and Kure Beach. When you get to the only traffic light in Kure Beach you have about 4 more miles to go.
