Race to the Rock at Chimney Rock 25 Mile Bike

Bib Numbers 2017

Heralded as one of “America’s Best Lakes” by USA TODAY, Lake Lure, North Carolina is home to your Premier Destination Race Weekend held along the shores of Rumbling Bald Resort and the peaks of Chimney Rock State Park. Returning for the 13th annual year, the scenic mountain town of Lake Lure hosts the Lake Lure Olympiad on August 11-13, 2017. Each year over 1,500 athletes come to compete at one of western North Carolina's largest three-day sports festivals, situated in the Blue Ridge Foothills.

Anchored by its "Three Races in Three Days" challenge

the Lake Lure Olympiad is a competitive sports festival boasting challenging courses, entertaining activities, and family fun at diverse scenic locations. It is also a non-profit organization that has given back more than $300,000 benefiting area charities and service organizations. Over the past 12 years, athletes of all ages and abilities have participated and continue to rave about the area's scenic beauty, delicious finish line food, and countless welcoming volunteers that make the Olympiad experience truly special and unique. Bring your kids and let them experience the same thrill of competition that mom and dad love, plus they earn medals too!

Turn your competition into a destination race weekend and enjoy the amazing backdrop of the Hickory Nut Gorge, serving as both a place to compete and a fun summer getaway spot with views that will take your breath away.

Race Details

Exclusive to the Lake Lure Olympiad is the once-a-year opportunity for cyclists to climb Chimney Rock. The final 3 miles of this 25 mile ride climbs uphill an average of 7-9%, but the stunning 75-mile panoramic views of Lake Lure and Hickory Nut Gorge at the finish line are well worth the effort. End the race weekend on a high note, literally!

Race to the Rock participants can go back into Chimney Rock State Park for sightseeing and hiking adventures free of charge anytime after the race on Sunday by showing their race bib at the ticket plaza. Spectators can enter the park for free prior to 7:30AM.

The 25-mile ride begins bright and early at 7:30AM just outside the Chimney Rock State Park entrance, and makes a 22-mile loop back to the park entrance before the final climb. Participants start out east on Hwy 64/74A, turn left onto Bills Creek Rd. (by the library), left again onto Buffalo Creek Rd. (by Dalton's Store) which eventually merges with Buffalo Shoals Rd. along Lake Lure's eastern shore. They turn right back onto Hwy 64/74A and back to the State Park entrance for the final epic 3 miles straight up Chimney Rock.
